Berwick Local History Museum

The concept for this project was to design a contemporary museum for the suburb of Berwick to highlight its local history. It would be located near the historic ‘Old Cheese Factory’. A building that survives from the 1800’s as a reminder of the area’s agricultural past.

The main design feature of the space is the Central Spring courtyard that connects all of the spaces in the building. This was inspired by the original name of the property, ‘The Springs’, named after the natural springs in the area.

How can we use local historical materials common during the Victorian era to create a tangible connection to the past in a contemporary way?
